Your AI tool ladder: where non-technical builders should start

Stop tool-shopping. Here's the ladder we recommend - start at the bottom and only climb when you need to.

The fastest way to never build anything is to spend all your time deciding which tool to use. There are dozens, new ones launch weekly, and the noise is overwhelming. So here's our honest, provider-agnostic advice: pick one, get good, and only climb when the tool can't do what you need.

The ladder

(We name specific current tools live in workshops, because the best pick changes - that's exactly why we stay provider-agnostic.)

Why a ladder, not a shopping list

Every rung runs the same loop - Describe, Generate, Look, Refine. Only the engine underneath gets more powerful. That means:

  • The skill transfers. Time spent on the bottom rung isn't wasted; it's the foundation for every rung above.
  • You climb for a reason. Move up only when your current tool genuinely can't do the thing you need - not because something new looks shiny.

The trap: tool-hopping

The most common way people stall is by jumping between tools instead of getting good at one. Each switch resets your momentum. Resist it. Depth beats novelty.

Your homework (almost impossible to fail)

  1. Pick one small, real problem in your own life - not your big startup idea, something small and real.
  2. Build it in one sitting with a browser-based builder. Ship something that runs.
  3. Publish it to a URL and send it to one person.
  4. Then consider a bigger tool for your bigger idea.

Most people still believe they can't build. The moment you ship one tiny thing that works, you've crossed a line most never do. That's your edge - and it's exactly what you'll walk out with from a From Idea to App workshop.
